"Positivity is expressed in the hairstyle and nail styles-they are expressions of the self and ways to feel good about oneself. In addition jonesing (high-spirited teasing with friendly barbs) is an example of positive, emotional expressions to express self and to bond with another. Overall the everyday activities represent the very essence of African American identity for the members of the Hair Emporium."
I really enjoyed reading about the day at the Hair Emporium, which is a mainly African American hair salon. Although I am not African American, I also get the same satisfaction they do when I go to the salon and get a good job done. It's nice to get pampered for an afternoon and as a women I think thats one of my favorite things to do. I agree that positivity is expressed in the hairstyles and nail colors one chooses. For example if you see someone with hair that is all messy and nails that are chipped you may think that they don't care about their appearance or are having a bad day. But if you see someone with nice bright nail polish or even dark polish and their hair all done nice you may say to yourself that that person looks nice and carrys herself well. For example the African American women in the pictures seem to have a lot of confidence positivity and judging from the smiles on their faces its because they feel good about themselves and they know they look pretty. The way you do your hair or nails can say a lot about a person. For me personally my hair and nails is something that I always take care of, I hate having chipped nails and having my hair undone. I really love doing different things to my hair and having fun colors on my nails. When i get my hair and nails done it defineitly gives me positive attitude, because I always feel so much prettier coming out of the salon. The right haircut and mani/pedi can do wonders to a womens attitude.
